What the rating means
Ratings are based on the financial strength of a credit union or bank, taking into account their capital, profitability, liquidity, and portfolio risk. Financial strength is important, because even though all banks and credit unions are required to have federal deposit insurance, deposits above the insurance limit could be lost if the bank or credit union fails. Regardless of insurance limitations, individuals and businesses could be subject to disruptions in direct deposits or automated bill payments if a bank or credit union is closed with no acquirer.
