Fall home prep tips

November 24, 2021

It’s officially autumn, and for New England homeowners that means fall home prep. Get your home ready for the season with these tips:

Clean Out Gutters

Blockages can happen when leaves and other debris become stuck in unprotected gutters. Blocked gutters can cause exterior damage and leaks, so it’s worth the small effort to clear them out to avoid problems later. Once you’re done, consider getting mesh gutter guards to help avert debris in the future.

Seal Leaks and Cracks

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gaps in caulk and weather-stripping can account for 10% of your heating bills. Check around windows, doors, and other entry points, and make repairs where necessary.

Turn Off Outside Faucets

With our harsh New England winters, outdoor faucets are at risk of bursting. Close off any shut-off valves to these faucets, and keep the lines open to drain.

Check for Exterior Repairs

Take a look at your siding, foundation, and roof. If anything needs repairs, make appointments now rather than once winter gets into full swing. Our Home Equity Line of Credit can help you with financing.

Do a Safety Check

Fall home prep can also include regular safety checks. Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and create a family escape plan in the event of a fire. Go over exit locations and determine a meeting point. Also, make sure you have a preparedness kit in the event of winter power outages.
